ON CAMPUS
UNL is a "permit-only" campus.  In other words, no one -- regardless of age-- can consume alcohol on campus property without a permit.  Campus property includes all buildings, residence halls, stadiums, parking lots, dining and conference facilities, and Greek houses.  Permits allowing alcohol at catered affairs where minors are present are approved by a Vice-Chancellor under a set of specific criteria.

Things you should know:

1. Obviously, the university is under the same laws of the city of Lincoln and state of Nebraska.
There is an expectation by the state and city that the minimum age drinking laws, laws guarding against drunk driving, and other alcohol-related violations will be enforced on campus as they are in the community.
2. A UNLPD officer or CSO can request entry into your residence hall or Greek chapter house room if they have PROBABLE CAUSE to do so.
Noise, loud music, obvious smell, or even a conformed report of illegal activity can serve as sufficient probable cause.  So can the observation that the person who has entered a room is in obvious physical danger.  Officers will always ask for permission first.  You can refuse entry -- but police can get a search warrant if needed.
3. A police officer can check for your consumption of alcohol anywhere on campus or in the community if they have PROBABLE CAUSE to do so.
Probable cause includes any behavior that is associated with intoxication, such as staggering, stumbling, vomiting, shouting, fighting, or other related behaviors.  You can refuse a breathalizer test, but police can still put you in protective custody.
